The opening day of the Squash Inn Classic – Sponsored by Faltami saw a pair of upsets, as wildcards Sofia Chavez and Sofia Ramirez knocked out seeded opponents to reach the last eight.
Chavez took on No.5 seed Lia Paz in her first match of the tournament, and required all five games to take the shock win. After finding herself 2-1 down, she limited Paz to just four points across the next two games, to book her spot in the quarter finals. She will face top seed Laura Tovar in the last eight.
The other wildcard to make it through from the opening day’s action in Mexico City was Sofia Ramirez, as she got the better of No.6 seed Blanca Vallarta in straight games, winning 11-6, 11-9, 11-7 in 23 minutes, to set up a clash with No.4 seed Aileen Dominguez on Friday.
Elsewhere, Colombia’s Maria Tovar and the Mexican trio of Julieta Mondragon, Diana Gasca and Jacqueline Camacho all booked their places in the last eight.
