Paul Coll holds the trophy aloft after winning the Black Ball Open squash tournament in Egypt.

Paul Coll ticked off a major bucket list item by upstaging Egyptian world No. 1 Ali Farag in straight sets to win the Black Ball Open squash tournament in Cairo on Tuesday (NZT).

With his latest triumph, Coll became the first non-Egyptian to win in the nation since 2017 and said it was one of his career goals to taste victory in Egypt.

The 29-year-old from Greymouth did it in emphatic fashion too, beating Farag 3-0 (11-7, 11-5, 13-11) in just 62 minutes to win his third major title of the year.

Coll had previously won the British Open and the Canary Wharf Classic.

Tuesday’s final was the fourth final meeting between Coll and Farag, with the only loss for Coll coming at the Netsuite Open in San Francisco in September.

“It was a real test for me tonight. I wanted to really make it tough for him. I stuck with my game plan from the word go,” Coll said.

“It was actually one of my goals was to win in Egypt. I really wanted to do it. It’s a really great place to come here, there’s so many great players. I’m really proud to win.”

Coll will return to action at the Tournament of Champions, held at Grand Central Station in New York next month.
